Security Breach Threatens NC Assisted Living Facilities
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are trying to find
a woman who has been impersonating a nurse to gain access to assisted living
facilities in South Charlotte.
Investigators said she has used that access to steal from residents, taking
jewelry, cash, and credit cards. The string of thefts began around the middle
of last month.
"It makes me angry," said Ann Moffat, the CEO of Sharon
Towers. Her facility was one of three or four that was visited by the woman."
She's posing as a nurse with a lab coat or nurses scrubs, coming in, sneaking
through the door, getting upstairs. Usually during lunch when the elderly folks
have gone downstairs and they have left their doors unlocked," said CMPD
investigator Steve Whitesel.
In addition to Sharon Towers, police said the suspect has targeted Cypress,
Sunrise and possibly Carmel Place. The suspect dresses the part and acts the
part, especially if she is confronted.
